Lets get straight to the point, a mission statement is short and simple and is one of the most important parts of a nonprofit organization. In fact a mission statement gets straight to the point. When reading a mission statement the reader should walk away with the soul purpose of your nonprofit organization's mission or at least have an idea. When writing a mission statement it's important not to stress over detail. As I mentioned earlier the mission statement gets straight to the point and you will be able to cover additional details later.
As you begin to write a mission statement remember to keep it short and simple. Your mission statement should range from one sentence to a paragraph at the most. A mission statement isn't a novel and it's important to remember this as your writing your mission statement. No one wants to read a page long mission statement, most likely they will quickly become bored. Keep in mind sponsors, donors, etc. will be reading your mission statement.
Now that you have basics, it's time to start writing. As easy as this process sounds, it may not be so easy to write.
You can begin by focusing on exactly what you started your nonprofit organization for. This is very helpful because this may bring your mission statement right out into the light. Your mission statement defines the mission, purpose and goal of your nonprofit. Sum up exactly what your nonprofit intends to do.
"to provide financial assistance for low income families"
Above is a clear example of a short and simple mission statement. Notice that it's straight to the point and it tells exactly what the nonprofits mission is. You can provide additional information in your mission statement as long as they explain the nonprofits mission.
Mission statements are clear and crisp. They are accurate in detail. When beginning to write a mission statement it's helpful to make a list of things about your nonprofit, such as who you plan to serve. You can take bits and pieces of your list and incorporate them to make your mission statement.
When writing a mission remember your not alone. You don't have to write a mission statement by yourself. A lot of times it's helpful to have input. Great input can from your board members. If your board members are already established sit down with them and create a well thought out mission statement.
Mission statements are the heart of a nonprofit organization. This should never be a stressful thing to accomplish. Take the heart you have for your nonprofit organization and put into your mission statement.
