You've just landed your first official grown-up office gig, and you've been advised that the dress code is "business casual". What exactly is that supposed to mean? Short answer: business casual is right in the middle between business and casual. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
Don't worry, you won't need to spend a fortune to build your wardrobe. With a few pieces, ten, to be exact, you will be well on your way to a great business wardrobe. You may even find that you already have many of these pieces in your closet.
1. Suit: A business casual office won't require you to wear a suit often, but there will be times when you're speaking in front of a group and you'll want to dress to impress. Don't get hung up on pants v. skirt choose the garment and style that flatter your figure and make you feel comfortable.
Look for: a neutral, such as black, brown, navy, khaki, or ivory, in a versatile fabric that can be worn all year. If you choose wisely, the pants or skirt in the suit can also be worn with other tops.
Avoid: bright colors, like red or pastels, and season-specific fabrics like linen and wool.
2. Black skirt: A black skirt is the basis of a sharp, professional look.
Look for: A slim pencil skirt, a simple A-line, or a fuller cut with a ruffle along the hem. Length can range from 2 inches above the knee to mid-calf.
Avoid: Styles that are very tight or higher than 2 inches above the knee.
3. Black pants: Everyone needs at least one pair of good black dress pants in their wardrobe.
Look for: A rise and silhouette that flatter your body
Avoid: very low rise waists and flared legs.
4. Neutral pants: Purchase at least one other pair of dress pants in a lighter neutral, like khaki or grey.
Look for: subtle pattern and texture, like pinstripes.
Avoid: very low waist and flared legs.
5. White blouse: You will find endless ways to wear a good, well-made white blouse.
Look for: a blouse that flatters your shape and style. Try alternate shapes to the classic silhouette, like empire waist or belted styles. For ease in care, look for stretch on the tags. This means that the blouse is made with a small percentage of spandex, which makes it fit better and resist wrinkles.
Avoid: shear fabric and heavy embellishment.
6. Colorful blouse: Select at least one other blouse in a fresh color or print. Choose a color that flatters your complexion and makes you feel confident.
Look for: subtle patterns, such as stripes or small polka-dots.
Avoid: large prints and unflattering
