How to keep your pet cool in hot weather

When summer rolls around we're not the only ones affected by the rising digits on the thermometer. Our pets must also deal with the heat. With thick coats the warm sun can make pets uncomfortable and even put them at risk of heat stroke.

Since we can't change the temperature outside we'll have to find ways to keep our pets cool in the hot weather. Below are some suggestions.

1. When it's hot it's a good idea to keep pets inside, if possible, where it's cool. If you can't keep them inside, make sure they have an area outdoors where there's plenty of shade. If there's no shade outside, purchase an outdoor party tent or canopy, or make sure pets have a covered shelter such as a dog house to escape the heat.

2. Keep the water dish full. Pets need more water when the weather is hot. It's easy for them to sweat and become dehydrated. Keep the water dishes full and add ice to keep the water cold.

3. Take pets swimming. Many pets love water and taking them swimming is a great way to keep them cool in hot weather. If you don't live near a body of water that is suitable for swimming, consider purchasing a small hard plastic kiddy pool to let them cool off in. Hosing them down is also a way to keep them cool.

4. Keep a wet bandanna around their necks. Get a bandanna wet with cold water and tie it around the pet's neck. Don't tie it too tight. Having the wet bandanna around their neck will help to keep them cool.

5. If you have an extra furry pet, keeping their hair trimmed will keep them significantly cooler. If you can't trim them yourself, take them to a groomer or a vet clinic that can do it for you.

6. If the pets stay outside you might consider hosing off the patio if you have one. Having the patio wet will keep it cooler and more comfortable for your pets.

7. Some stores carry misters that you can hook up to your garden hose that continually release a light cool mist. If your pets don't take to the water so well, this is a great way to use water to keep them cool without startling them.

8. Keep a fan outdoors. There are usually outlets on the exterior of the house. If you can, plug in a fan outside in an area where the pets can relax and enjoy the cool breeze blowing on them.

If you can't keep the pets inside this summer, these suggestions work great to keep your pet cool in hot weather.
