Changes in the financial and real estate markets over the last couple of years have taken many off their current path. Some families have seen drastic changes in their job situations, while still others have experienced the pain of foreclosure.
Whether you have seen big or small changes in your life during these times, the current economic picture most likely has given you a chance for reflection. Where is your life going? What lies ahead?
Change can provide opportunities for growth, as well as time to develop new skills and passions. While setting new goals, some people seek the help of a life coach. A life coach is someone who can help you discover where you would like your life to go and the steps required to get there.
If you find yourself at a cross-roads, you can take the following ten steps to become your own life coach, which will not only help you survive, but thrive, during changing times.
1. Re-evaluate your life.
Although your life may be taking you in a different direction, now is the perfect time to take stock of where you stand. Evaluate your current situation before you decide to make your next move. Are you able to stay in your current home? Do you have enough savings to cover your expenses? Will you be able to stay in the same community?
2. Dare to dream new dreams.
Somewhere between childhood and adulthood responsibility, people lose track of their dreams. Children, in their innocence, are much more likely to be open to new ideas and what the future might hold. Look back at your childhood. What were you passionate about? What did you love to do? Is now the time to pursue a life-long passion?
3. Try something new.
Everyone can get into a rut at times. Take this time to learn or try something new. Run a new route, try a pottery class, read a new book, or visit a new city. Be open to new things (or careers), and an opportunity may just present itself.
4. Reset your goals.
Once you have decided on the new path you'll take for your life, develop specific goals to get there. Keep your focus by writing them down and keeping them in a place where you'll see them every day.
5. Come up with a plan.
Whatever your goals may be, specify what you will need to do daily to keep those goals within reach. If your goal is to find a new job, write down the tasks you will need to accomplish in order to reach your goal. Will you send out three resumes each day? Visit a local job fair? Meet with past co-workers to develop your network of connections?
6. Find a supporter.
Whether it's a spouse, friend, or sibling, find a partner who can be your cheerleader and help keep you accountable to your goals. Reach out to someone who is positive, uplifting, and supportive. Tell them of your plans and ask them to be there for encouragement.
7. Set aside time for yourself.
Steal quiet moments when possible to reflect on your goals and aspirations. Time to think and prioritize are even more important during times of change.
8. Search for peace and acceptance.
If you practice a particular faith, or believe in meditation, take this time to search for peace about your current situation.
9. Experience gratitude for what is in your life.
Find joy in what you do have. Even though it may feel as if the world is crumbling around you, surely there are things for which you are thankful. Healthy children, a beautiful sunset, a phone call from an old friend can all bring about feelings of gratitude.
10. Seek extra help if needed.
If you feel overwhelmed by the changes in your life, seek help from a professional. A mental health professional can help guide and coach you through trying times, helping you assess your past and current situations and set goals for the future.
