George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia has an incredible assortment of student activities and opportunities daily. These activities help improve the quality of life for both on and off-campus students by offering valuable educational, career, health, and entertainment opportunities.
Educational activities
George Mason has several exhibits available free to all students. These include art and design exhibits by both student artists and artists from around the world. Exhibits often feature intriguing paintings, sculptures, and prints.
Students are invited to attend lectures, seminars, and panel discussions hosted throughout the year.
Other educational activities include workshops offered through various departments of the university. Workshop topics range from hardware and software applications to academic skills to career services. The Student Technology Assistance Resource Training (STAR*T) consistently offers free training workshops throughout each semester. The seminars cover a wide variety of software applications including Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, PowerPoint, Illustrator, and PageMaker.
Career preparation
George Mason University encourages students to get ahead by hosting biannual career and internship fairs. These events help students get acquainted with potential employers as well as practice their interview skills. Career Services helps prepare students for these events by providing workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and career planning.
Career Services also assists students with their academic career through academic skills workshops. Upcoming workshop topics include "Managing Performance Anxiety" and "Overcoming Procrastination."
Student health
There are many opportunities to improve one's health at GMU. These include scheduled classes in Thai boxing, kickboxing, aquaerobics, trident jiu-jitsu, and various forms of aerobics. For less structured exercise, students may use the facilities and equipment at the Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center and the GMU Field House. Both locations offer free admission to students and feature state of the art equipment.
The Counseling Center provides free services that assist students in improving their mental health. Self development workshops offered throughout the year focus on such topics as managing stress, controlling anger, and improving self esteem.
