Astragalus, or Astragalus Membranaceus, is a genus of over 2,000 plants that have been used successfully in alternative medicine for thousands of year, most notably as an important component of Chinese Medicine. Astragalus is a perennial plant indigenous to Asia, grown and utilized mostly in China and Korea but used as a supplement worldwide. The Astragalus plant grows 1 1/2 to 3 feet in height with a hairy stem, and the root of mature plants is harvested for use in alternative medicines. Uses of Astragalus derivatives include medications for the common cold, fever, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, kidney and heart disease, asthma and anemia just to mention a few of the more popular uses.

Astragalus is one of the most utilized and beneficial plants in the realm of alternative medicine, mainly because of it's diverse properties and components. Astragalus contains antioxidants which may protect users from serious illnesses like diabetes and cancer. It is likewise known to lower blood pressure and support the immune system, making it an ideal choice for individuals with heart issues. Perhaps most interestingly, Astragalus has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties which are quite unique in the diversity of potential uses. It is even thought to possess mild diuretic benefits, although more study is required to confirm this use.

Astragalus is available commercially in capsule and tablet form, various injectable forms and may be used topically as a tincture applied directly to the skin. Recommended adult dosages of Astragalus is usually less than 25 grams daily, and it's use should be monitored by a physician in cases involving the chronically ill or children. Astragalus generally has no serious side effects, however there are possible interactions with prescription medications and other herbal supplements. Astragalus should not be taken in any circumstance with drugs that suppress the immune system or with corticosteroids. It is always a good idea to confer with a physician prior to taking any herbal supplement, and to discuss possible misuse.
