The mind is a very complex place. What lurks within it sometimes affects how we feel, or our physical state, every bit as much as the worst possible disease known to man. Thoughts eat at our minds, stress the body and can cause heart problems, tension and strains which find no release. Those memories of things which have happened may haunt us. The words someone said may have such significance as to haunt our thoughts for decades, bringing back the pain of a moment, which means very little to anyone within our existing world. We don't speak these words, or talk about them and by keeping them inside, we give them no credence.

*Suicidal tendencies.
*Lack of self esteem.
*Disappointment.
*Words left unsaid.
*Our childhood.
*Our lives.
Depression.
In a case of depression, what creative writing does is give someone a means of escape. Instead of harboring thoughts which hurt and add to depression, writing helps someone to get their anger out of their system or to understand better why they are depressed. As an example, a very good therapy for depression is to sit at the computer first thing in the morning and write prose or verse to oneself without preconception. If an individual just allows themselves to type whatever first comes to mind without thinking about it, a pattern emerges and thoughts trapped within their mind are released.
Suicidal tendencies.
Poetry is a great form of release for the mind preoccupied with suicidal thoughts. Again, the writing acts as a pivotal point, where because the words were released, that person has a better chance of getting their thoughts into perspective. Read a few days later, those thoughts never seem as bad as they did when they were written and the release felt helps the mind to be calmer.
Lack of self esteem.
Creative writing plays a role in the way we think of ourselves. Words flow and even if they don't create the best work in the world are creative. Those with low self esteem often use poetry as a means of release. Seeing their words formed into verse reminds them of how they felt, and helps the mind to find solutions and in retrospect never to get back into that horrible state of self immersion again. They are a reminder of weakness which strengthens the path of those who move forward.
Disappointment.
People disappoint us on a regular basis. Our expectations are the real point here. We think things will happen and they don't. Disappointment can cloud the mind
