When I met her I was whole,
Overflowing with optimism
There was nothing we could not conquer
No dream was too big
No challenge to daunting'
for with each other
the word impossible did not exist
So our passion flourished and we wed
Gradually reality steeped our lives
Long hours, lousy pay, brief encounters
Yet we persevered
Kept the faith
Marched boldly onward
The word impossible occurred to us
The years slip by at a wicked clip
Routines became strongly embedded
Big house, big cars, big debts
Tempers flared
Hatred bred
You are impossible we told each other
Now I have been whittled down,
My only friends are words
Wife gone, son left, empty house
What happened
Redemption left
It is impossible to know how I failed.

My shadow quivers, hunched as a beaten dog.
Conformity is your demand.
