Tips on how to ride safely in a group of motorcycles

The summer just lends itself to getting outside and enjoying the sights and scenery. Riding a motorcycle really allows you to do this and for an even better time - get your friends to join you! Whether your just riding to breakfast, taking in a poker run or going on an extended bike trip safety should be your first priority.

If you are riding with a group of people you need to be aware of many things at once. The 4 major things to watch for are:

1. Weather - Weather conditions can cause unsafe conditions anytime whether you are in a car or on a motorcycle. Call and check what the weather conditions are for your route and destination. If there is inclement weather such as rain, snow or ice, or excessive heat in the forecast plan for frequent rest stops and adequate protection from the weathers extremes. Wear appropriate clothing for the temperatures and conditions. Drink plenty of water during trips with hot weather.

2. Road Conditions - Roads can be asphalt, concrete, dirt, gravel or sand. Heat can cause asphalt to become soft and cause ruts in the road that tires can get stuck in and cause accidents. Dirt, gravel or sand roads can cause accidents by decreased visibility due to dust being kicked up by the tires, lose sand and gravel can act like marbles under the tires making steering and turning very hard and hazardous. A bike can slide very easily when on lose soil. Rain, melting ice and sleet can make driving slippery and cause hydroplaning. Potholes cause hazards in themselves - If you hit a pothole you can be pitched from your bike or along with your bike causing injury to yourself, your bike and anyone behind you. Always be alert to what is ahead of you.

3. Amount of experience the riders individually have - Everyone has their level of comfort when riding their bike alone or with a group. When in a group, the more experienced riders should be at the beginning and the end of the group. They will lead the group at a safe speed down the highway.

4. Spacing and formation while driving - There is a certain amount of space required between the bikes when riding in a group. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 3 bike lengths between yourself and the bike in front of you. When riding in a group there is a certain formation that helps to allow for safe driving conditions. The bikes are staggered in a "z" type formation. One on the left, one on the right, one on the left and so on. Bikes with passengers should be on the right side of the road while single riders on the left. This formation allows for the bikes in "back" to maneuver safely out of harms way if an accident occurs. If a car gets into your group somehow just stay behind it until you can safely pass or the car turns off. Never speed up to catch the group. You can safely catch up to them at the designated break spot or at traffic lights or stop signs.

5. Alcohol and driving a motorcycle do not mix - Never drink while riding or between rides on break. Accidents can happen too quickly when everyone is in their top condition. Alcohol impairs judgement and slows reflexes. Ride Smart - No alcohol!

These things that you must watch out for allow you to have a fun and safe trip. Always be alert for unforeseen problems or occurrences. The more you ride the better you will feel in the saddle of your bike. Get out and ride - the more the merrier!
