They come home tired,
At times terrible knowledge
Peaks through their eyes
Things haunt them,
Things they have done
Things they have seen
Memories of smoke, fire, death,
Injuries to mind, heart, and soul
There must be balance,
Glimpses of a future
Hope for peace
Inside self
As well as safety
And freedom
From ever ready, always aware
After the war
Comes peace.
Achieving it can be hard work
Even another kind of war
In itself
