Tips on maintaining your self-esteem when confronted with job loss and the recession

There are few, if any, who can't relate on some level to the collective anxiety and stress due to the current economic times. Bankruptcies and job losses are on the rise while self-esteem, credit ratings and bank balances are falling. Our society teaches us our self-worth is determined by our careers, the material possessions we acquire and our net worth. Those hit hardest by the recession find themselves struggling to redefine what's truly important while also adjusting to a life that might no longer include the simpler things such as satellite television, an evening out or weekly manicures. The knowledge you're not alone in these struggles is hardly enough and some days become quite overwhelming. Seeking guidance through a trained therapist, however, can refocus energies and allow those who are having difficulties in their newly defined lives weather the storm while regaining the self-esteem needed to rebuild their lives and careers.

Although knowing that many are experiencing the same setbacks does little to soothe bruised egos and fears of the unknown in the job sector, what we can do is learn from those who have come through the other side; those who lived to tell the tale, so to speak. The fact is, the trials we face at different times in our lives allow us to evolve, become stronger and even be reminded of our own strengths. Many, after having lost their jobs and perhaps their homes, are sometimes afforded the opportunity to take a step back and reconsider what their real passions are. In turn, new careers were discovered that have led to much happier people who are better focused on rebuilding new lives. There are studies emerging that suggest these life-altering events were the driving force behind new paths being forged, paths that would have never been traveled had some things remained as they were. Engineers are now finding true contentment in a classroom teaching others in their chosen fields. Middle-management personnel are now earning their living as writers and many are turning their setbacks into opportunities to further their own educations.

Career counselors have stepped up to the plate to provide guidance and reassurances to those who feel as though losing their jobs equate to a loss of who they are. Indeed, it is traumatic; but it can also work to our advantage. For those whose marriages or other personal relationships are suffering, therapists are reporting more of their clients are coming in with determined outlooks but who might need a bit of guidance and direction as these new chapters in their respective lives begin. Traumatic changes and disappointments are part of our life cycles and it's easy to lose perspective; but as so many are learning, when these changes and disappointments come full circle, we are always better, stronger and more hopeful because of them. By incorporating the guidance of a therapist, you're allowing yourself every advantage to help ensure that hope and strength remains with you as you prepare for life's next adventure.
