There are many wonderful qualities we can share with others to be a good, loyal and compassionate friend. To be a friend, one needs to give kind consideration and treat the friend with respect and value.
A friend will be consistent, supportive and bring joy to one another. They will be considerate of him/her and offer encouragement when needed. They will know when it is more important to listen than to talk. A true friend is one of the greatest gifts we have in this life. Making a connection with someone and walking next to them in good times and bad, is the true meaning of friendship.
I would like to share a few tips I have learned along this journey, from many treasured and wonderful friends.
~Support
One of the greatest strengths of a good friend is the offer of support. This can be given in many different ways. Encouragement to a friend during difficult times is a great way to show support. Sometimes having someone to lean on can help a situation seem manageable.
You may offer to help a friend during a crisis and help lighten the burden. There are many ways to lend a hand. During an illness or following a surgery, you could offer to drive them to a doctor appointment. You could pick up groceries or medications if needed. Your friend may enjoy someone to simply sit and visit with them during their recovery. Be available to them if a need arises and assure them you are happy to do so. Be sincere.
~Listen
Be a good listener. When your friend talks, listen carefully to what they say. Make eye contact and give them an opportunity to express themselves completely. Good communication is imperative to good friendships. Offer advice when it is appropriate and never impose your opinion on them.
~Laugh
Always laugh with your friend. A good friend knows the importance of humor and laughter in the relationship. Laugh at their jokes and share funny stories with each other. You can be sure that laughter will bond you with someone and bring joy to the friendship.
~Trustworthy
Be loyal and faithful to the friendship. Remember what your friend tells you in a confidence is between the two of you. Be dependable and respectful to your friend. Allow them the assurance of your trust and you will have a friend for life. Be reliable so your friend can trust the consistency of your friendship.
~Give and take
Allow your friend to give back to you. Let there be a balance between you, so both feel needed and appreciated. Always show your gratitude for a kindness with a simple hand written note. There will be many opportunities to give and take and this will enhance the bond between you.
~Love
Love and cherish your friend. Show small acts of kindness to express your love. Love them when they are crabby and be quick to forgive. Be open with your love and appreciation for your friendship and never take one day for granted.
In conclusion, when we are a true friend, we will receive so much more in return. We will have someone we can rely on, laugh with and share a lifetime of memories. These relationships will sustain us in good times and in bad. They will bring quality and richness to our lives. To be a good friend is simple; offer support, unconditional love and laugh with your friend, every chance you can.
