How do you prevent dry skin? First let us look at what dry skin is: when discussing dry skin it is necessary to determine the difference between a dry skin and a dehydrated skin. Dry skin lacks oil whereas dehydrated skin lacks moisture. Dry skin characteristics include: It often feels tight and flaky with a thin epidermis. It is generally pinkish in colour and often prone to sensitivity, invisible pores due to lack of oil. It tends to age more quickly than other skin types, prone to fine lines and dehydration.

*Some facts about dry skin:*

As you mature in years the oil glands in the skin become less, thus there is less oil and your skin dry's out. Also if dry skin runs in the family you are more than likely going to end up with dry skin at some stage. Other factors to dry skin is the over use of soaps and other harsh chemicals, a dry and warm indoor climate, over exposure to sunbathing and other environmental factors play a big part.

*Some things to consider when trying to prevent dry skin:*

Although personal hygiene is very important there is no need to shower or bath more than once a day, unless you exercise such as going for a run or go to the gym. Also when you have your shower or bath make sure that the water is not too hot.

Use a mild soap that will not be harsh on your skin, also avoid using too much soap.

Once you have had your shower or your bath and you have dried yourself this is the best time to apply your body lotion or moisturiser. It is best if you use a moisturiser that is fragrant free; on the other hand some essential oils will be beneficial to dry skin.

Make sure that your regularly air your home, getting the air inside circulating, also make sure the temperature is not too hot or too cold.

Avoid sunbathing for too long, a) sunbathing can lead to many skin aliments, b) it will dry out the skin and, c) it can lead to pre-mature wrinkles.

If you do have dry skin and it is irritating you, implement some of the above suggestions as well as wearing light cotton clothing. The cotton is a natural fibre therefore it will let the skin on your body to breath and it will not be as irritating as man made fabrics.
