10 Google Maps tips and tricks

Google maps is one of the most popular mapping and routing tools available on the Internet. It can be accessed through the Google Maps website, and it's easy to implement API has made it a feature of many other third party websites and tools. It is also the default GPS mapping system for Android phones, which makes it a great alternative to a traditional GPS device. Google Maps has a very intuitive interface, and the following tips and tricks will help you make the most of it.

1. Finding something when you don't know the exact address
You don't need to know the full address of the place you want a map off, in most cases just entering the postcode and the country or a nearby landmark will find it. You can, for example, search for "Italian restaurants in London" and Google Maps will cross data with the standard Google Search to answer your query. From then onwards you just need to refine your search, by navigating on the map or being more specific about the geographical area you're interested in by adding postcodes or street names to the search field. You can even look for properties for sale and rent in cities such as London if you are interested in a particular area.

2. Planning a route
You can find the shortest route between two destinations by just clicking on the little marker in the map and selecting "Get directions". You can add extra steps for your journey by clicking "Add destination" and order them any way you prefer. You can choose between directions by car or by foot on the same left side navigation bar, and depending on your location also by public transport. And, if you want your route to go specifically by any element in the map, you can just mouse over the proposed route and drag the little white circle that will appear to a specific point.

3. Avoiding traffic black spots, highways and tolls
Clicking on the traffic button on the top right side of the map will show you traffic densities, overlaid on your map. Combined with the draw a route feature, you will be able to select a route that stays clear of any congestion. Also, on the left hand menu the show options link will allow you to request a route that won't have tolls or doesn't use highways.

4. Using public transport
You can also get directions on how to get to/from somewhere by using public transport and walking, where available. The public transportation portal for Google maps is called Google Transit.
