TV show reviews: Two and a Half Men

As a female who abhors cheap sex jokes and the degradation of women that has become so common in today's entertainment world, I will not hesitate to admit that I love the show Two and a Half Men. It's no more of an attack on women than it is a revelation of the stupidity of men. Anyone and everyone is fair game and it's hard not to appreciate that.

Yes, there are women who are portrayed in this show as cheap sex toys (as there are many of those in this world), but there are also women represented who are strong and independent and they consistently bring Charlie to his knees. Who wouldn't love that?

Charlie depicts your average American male (with a lot more money). He loves women, sports, and beer and not necessarily in that order. His worst fear is commitment but he will never say no to sex. Who doesn't know a man like this? However, the men we know aren't nearly as lovable as Charlie. His sense of humor and occasional off-color jokes keep us coming back for more, trying to anticipate what he'll say next. You'll notice that every time his brother, Alan, walks into the room, Charlie will get that mischievous look in his eye as he hilariously looks to exploit his brother's situation.

You almost feel sorry for Alan as you watch his ex-wife completely obliterate his finances and his growing son, Jake, who shows no talent in anything except in the department of food. However, Charlie's constant barrage of jokes helps the viewers by continuing to point out the humorous side of Alan's life. On occasion, Alan will get lucky enough to return the harassment and redeem himself.

Jake is the young man who is every parent's nightmare. He's adopted the family humor and has learned to deflect all of his dad's questions about school and homework. Yet, at the same time, he has managed to pick up every last one of Charlie's vices. This adds another element of comedy to the show as Alan is constantly trying to shield Jake from his uncle's world while at the same attempting to convince Charlie of Jake's vulnerability. Needless to say, it falls on deaf (or at least drunken) ears.

This show has been successful on TV for many years because of the reality represented with a hilarious twist. We take the humor that is presented here and apply it to the Charlie, Alan, and Jake of our own lives. Granted, it's not completely clean and wholesome like the Cosby show was, but if you step outside your home and look around, you'll recognize the atmosphere.
