How to be a successful entrepreneur

by Lou Belcher

Created on: July 16, 2009

Entrepreneurship is different than self-employment. The word entrepreneur denotes that the business you've set up or are about to set up is unique, creative, and innovative. To be successful as an entrepreneur, you need, above all else, to be a self-starter and to have a great idea. Here are the steps to becoming a successful entrepreneur by bringing your idea successfully to your customers and/ clients:

1. The successful entrepreneur will take the time to develop the idea for their business idea thoroughly before attempting to implement it. To join the ranks of successful entrepreneurs, it's important to ensure that you have the ability to define all aspects of your idea and to develop plans on how to bring your idea to life.

2. The next step in setting up your business is to develop a business plan for your entrepreneurial idea. In your business plan, be sure to include all aspects of how you will develop and implement your business. At this time, you must also determine and obtain a source for adequate start-up funds. Successful entrepreneurs are careful to ensure that they have enough financing to see them through the lean times and do not set up their businesses without sufficient funds.

3. Set up the business entity for your business according to the most appropriate business model. Obtain all the necessary business permits and licenses to meet state and federal regulations.

4. Once those necessary tasks are completed, begin to develop/obtain the materials for your business as well as set up an office or work area that will meet the work and storage needs of your business.

5. Key traits of an entrepreneur are excellent communication and leadership skills and the ability to build and train a team. It's your business, so you must motivate your team to carry out the mission of your business the way you want, in keeping with your standards and ethics. Successful entrepreneurs instinctively know how to keep their employees on track.

6. Once you are ready to begin, keep your name before your customers and potential customers through paper advertising and/or by having a website or blog. Even if your business is only local, it's important to have a website. Most people look up businesses on line before they would use the phone book. You don't want your customers to find your competitor and not you.

7. Successful entrepreneurs give good customer service. It's important to let your customers know that their satisfaction is important to you. In this competitive world, the entrepreneur who makes the customer feel as if their happiness is important will be successful in finding and keeping loyal customers.
