The importance of environment in student success

Environment is very important to a student's success. A child who is in a fun comfortable environment learns more and enjoys class better than a child who is not. A class room with good decoration such as the student's art work, enticing games and crafts, good clean work areas, etc make for an inviting opportunity for the students to learn while still having fun. Classrooms need to be fun and rewarding while still offering high standards of education.

Children need to feel welcomed and safe in their learning environment. When they have no fear of day-to-day encounters with bullies or a teacher they do not like the child will have more time to spend learning. If a child is having trouble at school with bullies or a teacher the parent should consult with the school system to resolve the problem. A transfer to another class room may be the only answer if little Bobby feels teacher Grouch is picking on him while little Bobby may be able to get peace from the school bully by teacher Generous, a kind and caring teacher, sitting her foot down on the bully policy. Pay attention to your child. Ask how their day at school went, ask what they learned, and always be attentive to any problems they speak of. Getting to the root of your child's problem will allow them to feel secure in their environment.

Learning for a child should be fun and entertaining. No one likes to feel forced to do something they do not want to do. Fun learning allows for children to learn and not really even realize they are doing so. Children like to feel smart and special. Smaller classrooms allow for more one on one time between student and teacher. This can often increase students learning ability by leaps. A child having problems is more likely to discuss their problem in a one on one conversation than if there are fifteen or so other sets of eyes staring at them. When a child has a problem learning one on one care allows them to catch up quicker than if that care was not available. Keeping up with the class makes a child feel more comfortable and more eager to attend class and try to learn. Smaller classrooms also ensure that children receive recognition for a job well done. This boosts self-confidence as well as the eagerness to learn.

We cannot expect school to be the only comfortable environment a child needs to be in. A child's home life can affect how they feel about school. A child needs to be in a loving and caring environment. How well a child learns starts at home. A child who feels safe and secure at home will tend to feel more self assured at school than a child who does not have a good home life. Children in a good home react better when disciplined than children of a bad home.

Learning is not all about the buildings we learn in and the comfort they offer. Learning is about how we feel about ourselves. A child who is confident will take on more tasks than one who is not. A confident child will answer questions during class and be eager to be called on. Confident children who are eager to learn make wonderful students no matter what the environment they are in because they seek new experiences and knowledge. Environment is important but as you can see it is not all that matters in the learning process.
