Memoirs: Have you ever fallen in front of a person and what was your reaction?

by Tiffany G King

Have I ever fallen in front of a person and what was my reaction? Being a self-certified klutz I have on many occasions fallen in front of others. I now can fall with grace, but I have had years of practice to master this art. High school brings two experiences to mind. The first experience was my sophomoreyear. That day was a rainy going to be late if I do not run to class day. However, I happened to be wearing these high heel sneaker like shoes that were not meant for running. As nature would have it, I fell in the parking making my mad dash for class. To top that off kids were laughing at me, and I looked down at my torn jeans with blood running all down my leg and the gravel stuck in my knee, and my thought was oh yeah, I am going to be late. So I went off to the nurses office to get some betadyine and some tweezers, and band aids,. The way back to class I was yelling at myself in my thoughts. Thoughts such as you had to wear those shoes, you had to run?, Did you really have to run to class? And then I enter the room and it was the class that I most hated and my worst subject which was MATH. The teacher proceeds to write me a slip for detention being that I am late. I on the verge of having a bad day show her my knee, and my nurse's excuse. Still not good enough I get detention. I feel embarrassed beyond belief now everyone has seen my tattered jeans, and was like that sucks for you. I often think back to that moment because I have a scar to show for it.

The second experience was my junior year in band class. Band was my family and I was like the big sister to the sophomores and under and the little sister to the seniors. Of course, they knew me for all my slips, trips, and daily blunders. We were creating our own music on this particular day, and so music stands, papers, pens were everywhere. I excused myself to go to the bathroom. To give you an idea we were next to the auditorium so you had to climb a few stairs to get where you were going. On the way back from the bathroom, I make it to the band room, but somehow miss five whole steps. Yes, five I totally just fell in the room. Not only that I fall face first and land on my stomach with my arms stretched out in front of me. I would have been safe if we were playing baseball. I look up and see people writing on papers, and they are writing numbers and holding them up. I got scored for my lovely fall. So on that occasion what should have been utter embarrassment turned to complete laughter. There is nothing like family to get you through a rough time.
