Sure there are pros and cons to both sides of this argument. In fact, I think I am torn between the two choices. Let's take a gander at both positions before making a choice.
First, let's look at cost, shall we? Say you already own a DVD player, so the cost does not affect anything. If you wait till the DVD is on sale, you may be able to buy it for around ten dollars or so, depending on where you purchase it. However, it is a movie you really want to see, so you would rather buy it when it first is released in stores. Buying it then will make it cost around 20 dollars, if not more with the rising costs these days. At home you will probably have snacks, drinks, as well as some microwaveable popcorn lying around. If not, you can buy them at your local Wal-Mart for a fairly cheap price (unless you only by name brands, I cannot help you there).
How about the price for going to the theater? I have not been to the theater in ages, but the last time I did go the tickets were $7.50, at least! Of course, you cannot forget to buy the snacks. The movie theater experience would not be the same without the snacks, drinks, and the all too famous buttered popcorn. By the time you are finished ordering the snacks for everyone (or even if you are going alone), you are probably looking at an empty wallet. So, I think it is safe to say that if price is your ultimate deciding factor of where you will see movies, it is probably better to stay at home while watching your favorite flicks.
How about the comfort level? At theaters, you will encounter long lines for snacks, and bathrooms. Not to mention noisy people all over the place. Surely you cannot pause to take a trip to the restroom, or to fill up your drink. The floors are sticky, and the seats are typically uncomfortable. Some theaters have invested in seats that are more comfy, but all do not have this luxury. Even if they do, most likely your ticket to see the movie would probably cost even more.
In the privacy of the home, you do not have to deal with any of these factors. Need a bathroom break or a refill on your tasty soda? Just hit the pause button, they were created for a reason. Also, you can watch the movie as many times you would like if you own the DVD. At home there are not as many distractions, either. Unless you have a lot of children, it will likely be less noisy, and no people trying to politely exit the row when they need to go somewhere themselves.
So why would you want to go to the theater at all? Is it because of the experience, are you going on a date, or is it a Friday night get together with friends? Really, it is all up to personal experience. You may like to go for the experience of seeing the movie on the big screen with surround sound. I used to like going on occasion with friends; it was a nice time to get together and share in the moment of a new movie being premiered. Now that I am older, I would much rather own (or rent) the movie and watch in the comfort of home. However, I think most would still like to go watch movies at the theater for the experience, and who am I to stop them?
