Does God exist?

God's existence is a question asked by many people. Theologists, scientists, philosophers, and everyday people. When tragedy strikes many ask why God allowed such an awful thing to happen.

My son is a Biblical scholar. He can go on for hours about manuscripts that have been found that seem to support the existence of God. There are many similarities in various religions. If you study Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, and even Islam, there are many similarities. These were developed in far-flung areas geographically and historically.

The Bible, written by scholars and ordinary people, is considered God's word. It has sold more copies than any other book. It has lasted for 2000 years. Much of it was handed down as oral tradition.

I believe that a person's faith and belief is a very personal thing. God's existence is not something that can be proven scientifically. How would you prove that love exists? I would say because I've experienced it. I have loved and I have been loved.

I know God exists because I have experienced his presence. I'm not talking about a burning bush or George Burns. I know he was with me when I had surgery. He helped me prepare for a difficult decision and an emotionally charged operation.

I learned I had breast cancer by phone from a person who wanted to schedule an appointment with a cancer surgeon. After I hung up the phone, I stood still trying to absorb this news. I was in shock.

As I stood there, I felt a presence and knew it was God. Suddenly, I felt warmth flow through me. I would not be alone to face this. God would be with me every step of the way.

Looking back I can see God's hand all along the way. He provided women who had experienced the same surgery and could reassure me. He led me to a book and CD that would guide my preparation emotionally for a long difficult surgery. When I felt scared, he was there to hold my hand and comfort me.

God's presence can be seen in so many ways. I live in a state that has harsh winters. From early November until late April, the landscape is bleak. One morning after an overnight snowstorm, I looked out the window and saw a bright spot of brilliant red. It was the cardinal who, with his wife, lives in our lilac bushes.

I smiled and thought what a wonder it was that this beautiful bird stayed with us throughout the winter. Then I saw God's love in this gift. Where else would a beautifully colored bird, bring such warmth and gladness?

I felt God's presence the first time I held my granddaughter.
