Is a Labrador Retriever right for you?

When deciding a breed of dog, why not consider a Labrador Retriever? A Labrador Retriever is a breed which is beautiful, safe around children, and perfect for hunting.

Under the Labrador Retriever breed are the black lab, the yellow lab, and the chocolate lab. They all are beautiful dogs with personalities of their own.

When considering this breed be sure that you want a large active dog. These dogs even when still considered puppies can go about 70-80 pounds. Big dogs take up room in the house, your yard, and your vehicle. Big dogs are often clumsy when young and can unintentionally hurt you in their playing and can knock stuff down when getting over exuberant.

A Lab is a puppy longer than some breeds and very active. They are all legs and energy when young and as I said that can last up to three or even four years. They do eventually settle down and obedience classes will certainly help, but they are active dogs. Ask yourself if you are ready for all the action and demands of keeping a large active dog.

Labs are some of the best dogs around kids. Even though they are normally big and clumsy at first, they are gentle around children. Just protect the kids when small from the loving, affectionate, ball of energy that wants to love them.

They are one of the most loyal dogs you will ever find and will always greet you the same way no matter what you've done. They love unconditionally.

They have the energy and ability to become great hunting partners. They are swift of foot and keen of scent. Most of these dogs love the sport and love spending anytime with their owners. They love the outdoors and are great water dogs.

Labs love to swim and are fearless in the water and often in the wild on hunting trips. They are a great man's dog, but I've seen them be loving and loyal with all family members and all female and child owners. I say owners, but as I always correct, we do not ever own dogs, nor should we. They are living beings and we should be as good companions to them as they are to us.

Because of size and playfulness, while not owning them, we must be in charge of them most of the time. They love to please and will try to learn anything they are taught. They are very intelligent dogs and some look like they will speak to you any moment. They really listen to your voice more than words, but try to understand what it is you want them to do.

If you can put up with a large, clumsy, exuberant dog until they settle down and grow into their feet, this breed is for you. You will always get much more than you give as they becomes sleek, beautiful, graceful animals who want nothing more than to protect, please, and love you.

We have had and known personally several and they always get the highest marks.
