The ABCs of spirit guides and mediumship

"What? Say that again, Sam. No, show it to me. Thats it, thank you; thank you, Sam."

The above sentence should be familiar to viewers of Living TVs Most Haunted. They are, of course, the words of spiritualist medium, Derek Acorah and in reference to his spirit guide, Sam. It appears that spirit guides are a common phenomena amongst mediums, often showing intelligent and individual personalities that assist the medium in his work. It is, however, exactly this idea that needs more scrutiny in order to find out if spirit guides exist at all and, if so, what they actually do for the mediums they help.

Because independent entities that think and act independently are not a part of my personal viewpoints toward life, I have to think of what could be an alternative explanation as to their validity and application. In most cases, the integrity of the mediums themselves is, undoubtedly, questionable. Because much of the profession is peopled by quacks and frauds, most testimony to the existence of spirit guides has to be treated with the utmost scepticism. Otherwise, it would be all too easy for a medium to help you lose your inhibitions (with, of course, control of the purse strings) and confuse an issue that is orientated by opinion and fancy in the first place.

It would, perhaps, be prudent to start with some of the general characteristics of a spirit guide.

Ultimately, they are there as a means of primary and secondary psychic defence. Because of this, they are intrinsically linked to the individual medium that they serve and seem to only ever act in his or her best interest. Interestingly, there seems to be no testimony intimating that one medium can sense the presence of another mediums spirit guide. Because of this, we have to wonder exactly what the nature of these curious entities dictates. If they are, indeed, a form of ghost as is generally accepted, then it shouldnt be a problem for another medium to communicate. In fact, due to their seemingly agreeable nature, many mediums could theoretically use the same spirit guide. This would dilute their usefulness for other mediums, but most would be willing to accept quality is better than quantity when considering paranormal investigation. There are, however, absolutely no reports of this being the case. With that in mind, we have to start looking into the more consequential facets of these entities.

Spirit guides are complete servants. In other words, they never seem to make a decision without the mediums say so.
