This isn't because they want to club together and have people do things for them, but because their talents (assuming they have any) can be put to better use amongst like minded people, people who understand and appreciate the Satanic ideal and aesthetic. Membership is also a tip of the hat to the Church founder, it's hierarchy and other members who've made the same commitment to Satanic excellence. The fee you pay is a tithe for anyone with a job, therefore, it provides a simple delimiter for those who are merely curious. You don't "pay $200 for a red card", you pay for the opportunity to show what you've got amongst peers that are as talented and cynical as you are. Those who make their membership work for them, typically consider it the best money they've ever spent. Those who want the Church of Satan to teach them about Satanism are sorely disappointed.
And they should be.
Anton LaVey wrote all of his books in the common tongue and by this I mean they were written in plain English, without pointless rhetoric, complication and self-styled jargon. Those who don't understand its pages never will, no matter how often they are told it; that's why Satanists are born and not made. There are also many, however, who will understand some of the contexts and sympathise with the points that are made. Again, though, they are not to be confused with Satanists. These are the two sides of "The Satanic Bible", the two sides that most people will fall into.

The book, along with all other works by LaVey, will make you laugh and wince, smile and frown, laugh and cry and generally relive parts of your life the way you've already lived them. Don't forget that "The Satanic Bible" was written because Dr. LaVey looked for a book like it and couldn't find one. Therefore, it was something he used as a tool to enhance his experience of life. The current High Priest of the Church of Satan, Magus Peter Gilmore, is also quick to point this out. Satanism, as a religion, shouldn't be a replacement for your life; it should be a tool that enhances an already happy one. If you read the works of LaVey and decide they're not for you, travel off in your own direction - there is no Church of Satan press gang.
If it is for you, however,
