I'd choose a blog over a static website anyday now that I've found Wordpress. Why? A blog is a way in which you can engage with your target market and give them a reason to revisit you.

With Wordpress you can add static pages to your blog and the blog doesn't have to be the landing page, so effectively you can create a whole website feel around your blog.

In this day and age where there are so many plugins that make expanding your blog into an e-commerce site with relative ease, there really is no reason why you would want to restrict yourself to just a website. After all, a blog, where you load up interesting information that is relevant to your target group, where they can subscribe to receive regular updates, really is a far better option in attracting your target market to your products.

Blogs are also friendlier than a standard website as they offer the opportunity to add category searches and archives of posts, which make navigation really simple and effective. They also offer the unique opportunity for others to comment on posts and give feedback, which is highly valuable in any business. Plus add a little sociable plugin and people can tell the world about your products.

With a blog you can also display movies, audio clips, photo albums and other multi-media options with relative ease. Also, adding information to a blog and making changes is relatively simple once a blog has been customised which means that there is a lot of user-friendliness to blogging.

The implementation of Wordpress and other blogs has enabled people who are not highly trained website technicians, to be able to create content, to modify existing content and to have more control over the end product. The flexibility you get with a blog far surpasses the limitations you have with a static website.

Take me for example. I'd struggled my way through creating websites in an archaic text/visual editor on one of the web hosting sites. It took me literally hours to make changes and the end product was very ordinary. Now that I have mastered using Wordpress, I have moved everything across and within a few hours I am able to create a full blog site, complete with information, links, images, video, audio etc. The time saving is huge and the end product is of a far greater quality. For someone like me, who is cash poor, it is a fabulous alternative to paying $1000's of dollars to a website designer, especially when I really enjoy getting my fingers into projects like this. In fact, it's turned into a profitable business that I am now able to pass on my knowledge to others as one of the services I provide.

So for me - Blog any day far outweighs the benefits of a stanard website.
