Information to include on your business card

by Lisa Oates

Created on: July 15, 2009

Business cards are a very important part of any business marketing plan. Professionals use them when reaching out for referrals, getting new business, sending snail mail, and so forth. Including the following information on a business card will help those who receive it get a better picture of what you do and who you are.

Different types of people will get your business card at any point in time, so it is imperative that you have any possible piece of information about you on the card that they might need.

NAME
It is obviously important to include your name on your business card. If no one knows your name, how do they know who the card came from, or who to call?

ADDRESS
Put your mailing and physical address on your business card. You want people to know where to go to find you, and where to send mail. Everyone should also put city, state, and zip code information on the business card, even when only dealing locally, because you never know who might get their hands on your business card in the future. A friend could refer a friend who lives two states away!

CONTACT INFORMATION
Nowadays, everyone has an email address, and usually a web site. Put that information on your business card. Some people might want to contact you, but don't have an urgent request, so sending an email would be the best bet. They might also want to find out more about you before deciding to use your services, so having your web site address on your business card would be helpful for some.

Another important piece of contact information is phone and fax numbers. Include your office and mobile phone numbers so someone can get a hold of you more easily.

LOGO
If you have a logo for your business (and I suggest you get one of you don't have one yet!), put it on your business card. It creates brand awareness. When someone sees your logo on your business card and then on your web site, it provides recognition, which is a big step in also providing a sense of loyalty. The more folks see your logo, the more aware they'll be of you, and the more they'll trust you.

PHOTO
Professional photos give potential customers a better idea of who you are. If they see your photo, they'll recognize you when they see you in person, and it provides a sense of trust. The more professional you look in your photo, the more you give off an air of expertise. You'll have to prove that you are an expert once you start working with your clients, though!

MOTTO
Some companies have mottos, like Nike's Just Do It. If you have a motto that you like to use regularly, put it on your business card without making it look too crowded.

Remember to keep your business card looking professional and clean. Keep it simple, and create it to target your specific audience. If necessary, get a graphic designer to develop it for you. It will be worth having a great looking card when that business starts rolling in!
