Quite often newly diagnosed asthmatics have difficulty using their inhalers because the spray comes out too quickly or it burns the tongue. If this is the case, then it is quite possible that a spacer is needed in order to be able to use the inhaler properly and obtain the best benefits from it. A spacer is a long tube that you can add to the inhaler so that it slows down the delivery of the medication making it beneficial in relieving your discomfort.
The use of spacers make it much easier for the medication to reach the lungs where it is needed. They should only be used, though, with inhalers that deliver inhaled corticosteroids. Through the use of this device, less medication comes into the mouth so that there is less irritation. Asthma Associations recommend that anyone using an inhaler should do so with the use of a spacer.
There are also disadvantages with using spacers with asthma inhalers. They take up much more space than a small inhaler. For women with a large purse, this may not pose much of a problem, but for men who carry the inhaler in their pocket, it can be quite cumbersome. Children who need to have an inhaler with them at all times may have some difficulty bringing the spacer with them all the time, as well.
It is quite easy to use a spacer with an asthma inhaler. First shake the inhaler three or four times before you start to use it. Then remove the cap from the inhaler and from the spacer, if the model you use has a cap on it. Insert the inhaler into the spacer and exhale away from the device. Put the mouthpiece of the spacer in your mouth and close your lips around it. Press the top of the inhaler one time only and inhale very slowly until you take a full breath. You will hear a whistling sound if you are breathing in too quickly when you use a spacer with an asthma inhaler. This will alert you to slow down the inhale. Hold the breath for about ten seconds and then exhale.
You should clean the spacer on a regular basis. This is also an easy task. The device can come apart and all you have to do is swish them around in warm water using a mild soap. Hot water, rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant of any kind should never be used in the cleaning process. You do not need to try to dry the inside of the tubing with a cloth. Instead, just leave it to dry on a clean towel overnight and then put it back together.
When you purchase a spacer to use with your asthma inhaler, it will come with instructions on how you should use it. For example, this device is not for use with a dry-powder inhaler. It should also be kept away from sources of heat, such as the stove or heaters. When you find it difficult to get used to your inhaler, you should ask your doctor about the possibility of using a spacer to make it easier for you to take your medication.
