Investment is a subject so many people are interested in, it can be rather boring. When you write about investment, how can you ensure your readers stay awake, enjoy what you have to say and learn?
Our first point of attention is terminology. Investment, like most subjects, has its share of terms and jargon but overwhelming your readers with terminology is a certain route to boredom. Lighten up.
At the same time, don't oversimplify. Your reader may be well versed in investment terminology and explaining every little detail may produce just as much boredom. Figure out who your market is and what level of knowledge they already have about investment.
Once you know your market, you don't need to avoid terminology altogether. Include definitions of terminology unfamiliar to your readers in work. Your readers will appreciate the addition to their knowledge base. Take care not to write clunky, glossary-style definitions. Meld the definitions into the flow of your writing.
Your style impacts how readers react to your writing boredom or inspiration. Sometimes a style comes naturally but other times, you choose your style. For example, you can aim for an informal style, such as that employed by Australian Broadcasting Company finance reporter, Alan Kohler. Work in anecdotes, pop culture references or a little humour to inspire your readers.
Balance stylistic elements with reliable facts. Readers interested in investment are looking for information to help them manage their finances so they need to trust your authority on the subject. Kohler has the benefit of the ABC's backing to add authority to his style. Other writers, especially Internet writers, must work harder to earn their readers' respect.
Tying terminology usage and style together, we can see the importance of avoiding dense writing. Keep paragraphs light. Use consistent style. Don't bombard your reader with definitions. Don't use lengthy words where short ones will suffice. Don't repeat the same point or definition. Balance is a key word here.
Another aspect of investment writing worth considering is you. Do you find investment interesting? Find the topics of investment which inspire you and you will be able to pass on knowledge to readers with more clarity and conviction. Learn your subject matter thoroughly so words come naturally and definitions are second nature.
Finally, keep it to the point. Your readers came to read about investment probably about a specific subtopic of investment. Tell them what they need to know. Keep what they don't for your next article. Increase their knowledge and you can increase your readership.
