The decision to undergo any cosmetic surgery is not one that should be taken lightly. Procedures such as liposuction are expensive, mentally and physically draining and also risky. After finding a cosmetic surgeon whom you are comfortable with and confident in, there are a number of things you should do to prepare yourself for the procedure.
1) Research
With any surgery, mental preparation can mean all the difference in recovery. The surgeon you choose will help you along the road of preparation by providing reading material, educating you on how the procedure is done and what to expect afterward. This normally occurs before the final decision to make a surgery appointment is made. This information will help you take proper care during recovery.
2) Follow your surgeon’s directions and recommendations
Most surgeons will recommend a specific diet for their patients to follow in the weeks leading to liposuction. He or she may also impose other restrictions to help achieve optimal results.
3) Make lifestyle changes before liposuction
With the approval and guidance of your surgeon, it may be helpful to begin making your lifestyle changes prior to liposuction. By exercising and eating properly beforehand, your body will have what it needs to heal quickly and with less risk of complications.
4) Make sure you can afford it
One of the largest stressors the North American population faces today is money, and stress can lead to negative effects on the body. Liposuction can be extremely expensive, especially for the services of a reputable and experienced surgeon. The average liposuction procedure ranges from $5500-$9000 USD.
5) Plan for your recovery period
Everyone heals at their own rate. While some patients may be functioning normally again after only a few days, others may take weeks. Consider your own medical history and plan accordingly. Be sure someone will be available to drive you home after surgery. Have someone to assist at home where needed for several days following. Time away from school or work and care for children for at least a week should be prearranged.
Taking these steps to prepare yourself for liposuction will ensure that you have a peaceful and stress free recovery period. Be sure to discuss the aftermath of liposuction with your surgeon and follow all of his advice and guidelines carefully. If any doubt sits with you, be sure to think carefully about the many non-surgical weight loss alternatives that are available.
