The 5 Most Suitable Plants for Hanging Baskets

Hanging baskets just have that special appeal that outnumbers the interest in normal indoor house plants. Although some people have the perception that indoor hanging basket plants are difficult to grow and to maintain, the contrary are true.

The secret to the success of indoor hanging basket plants are not found in the care and maintenance of the basket but rather a simple matter of choosing the correct type of plant specie that will be appropriate for the specific area you would want to display the basket.

Apart from the plant specie you need to consider factors such as the temperature, light intensity and humidity of the room that you want to hang the basket.

In addition, your choice should portray a part of your individuality. People who love plants and like to take time to care for them can choose plants ranging from the more customary plants to some more out of the ordinary types that needs more attention. If you regard plants as a mere decor item to your surroundings, less demanding and robust types of species will work best.

Some time-honoured indoor hanging basket plants that are known for being easy to grow and an excellent success rate are some of the Ivy species such as Devil's Ivy, Grape ivy and the Swedish ivy. Other types of plants that are perfect for growing in a hanging basket indoors are the Spider plant and Wandering Jew.

When you consider an indoor hanging basket, light intensity can be regarded as the basic factor for growing success. The following plants will be an ideal choice for places with low light intensity such as north facing windows or a dark corner.

1. Grape Ivy (Cissus rhombifolia)

A very popular plant for low light hanging baskets is the Grape Ivy. The Grape Ivy earned the name from the spiralling ringlets comparable to those you find on a grape vine. The lustre green foliage grows on brown stems. Once these leaves grow to about 2 feet they start to drop over the sides of the basket.

2. Devil's Ivy (Scindapsus aureus)

The devil's ivy is repeatedly mixed up with the heart shaped leaf philodendron. These plants too have heart shaped leaves with yellow and white colouring. When placed in a brighter light spot, the colouring will become more prominent. The devil's Ivy is an excellent plant for hanging baskets. They do not require intense care and only need to water the plant once the soil is dried out.
