Visiting Chile's lake district

Chile's Lake District is a popular vacation spot with scenic mountains, lakes, forests, beautiful resorts, handicrafts, volcanoes that are snow covered. It is called the Lake District since it has 12 major lakes flowing through and a lot more around the landscape. Rivers, hot springs, waterfalls etc. surround these lakes and there are 6 major volcanoes in the district as well. This Lake District is among the most popular tourist destinations in Chile and it is seen as similar to Switzerland. The region has beautiful flora and fauna as well as plants and animals.

When to Travel:

Chile's Lake District should be visited according to ones liking for rain. During the spring and summer, November-April are months that are relatively dry but rain can be expected anytime during these months. However, heavy rains are expected between May to October and it can also get cold. Beware of flooding which can delay travel plans during this period.

Getting to the Lake District:

Reaching the Lake District is possible through air, bus, sea or lake. Any flight to the airport can be easily booked from a domestic or international flight terminal and browsing on the internet for car rentals and hotels is also fairly simple. Bus services are available from many cities including Santiago. There are many cruises available from Puerto Montt which is the gateway to Chile's Lake District. Lago Todos los Santos is a very popular water crossing which can be used to travel by lake. In order to travel by land Panamerican Highway and such other routes can be used depending on where you are traveling from.

Shopping and Eating Out in Chiles Lake District:

This region is home to the Mapuche Indians and is thus famous for their popular handicrafts which are sold all over the district in various shops and fairs. Since there are 12 major lakes flowing through the abundance of water makes it an ideal place for seafood. In order to get a wide variety of fish the fish market Angelmo is a must visit. There is also a huge handicraft market displaying the traditions and creativity of the region.

The local delicacy is mainly sea food. There is Parillada da Mariscos which is mixed seafood, Curanto which consists of different kinds of meat and sausage, potatoes and corn cobs and it is served in a pot covered with leaves. This is generally served at fiestas. Chilean wine is also famous world over and to do justice to the trip it is a must try.
