The game developers called Rake in Grass and Meridian4 have both made similar games, though that is only because both of their games are top-down shooters where you need to square off against hundreds and hundreds of enemies that come in waves. Most of their games also feature a levelling system. There is just one that doesn't and that's the first Alien Shooter game, though it does enable you to upgrade your equipment at least.
So, while they are top-down shooters, there are differences between them and they will be detailed here.
RIP Trilogy:
The first game saw you take on wave after wave of enemies, yet you could not move your character. You could only fire a turret at them. The other two games kept the concept of blowing away wave after wave of enemy, but they allowed you to move your character which was much better for the gameplay. Each game also features a levelling system, though the first two games has you selecting one of three random perks upon each level up. The third game implemented a skill tree system that eliminated the randomness.
There are many levels featured in the three games but they are short. Each level only ever takes place on one screen as well, so you cannot move to the edge of the screen and have it scroll revealing more of the level.
Alien Shooter series:
The Alien Shooter games see you killing wave after wave of enemies like the RIP Trilogy does. The first game and indeed the remake is very simplistic like the RIP Trilogy. Alien Shooter 2 made the game more complex though and this is largely due to the game featuring larger levels, a more complex levelling system and plenty of items to buy/equip alongside what could be termed a better story. The story is better due to it holding a more prominent place thanks to interactions with other characters and quests.
The levels themselves see you killing wave after wave of enemies as mentioned. The levels themselves are more expansive than the ones featured in the Rip Trilogy and the levels are really quite large in the second game. This is largely the main difference between the games gameplay wise as the levels cannot fit on one screen. Another big change the games is the gore factor. The Alien Shooter games are very gory and it's possible to paint entire levels red with the blood of your enemies, as the carnage doesn't disappear. It can lead to you admiring your handiwork after you've despatched hundreds of enemies and gaze upon their remains.
