Why it is worth considering going back to school after a layoff

Unfortunately, for many workers the possibility of being laid off or losing their job has become a reality. With the severe downturn in the economy affecting most businesses where does one turn to for help finding a new job? Or how can the available employee separate themselves from others while job searching? Going back to school could be the needed boost in obtaining a new position.

During this time of strong competition for any job opening, it will be necessary to stand out in the crowd. Employers now can sit back and look for a reason to hire. The person who is willing to take the initiative for further education could be that diamond in the rough.

This process may seem daunting at first, for many workers feel they are too old to go back to school. Yet it is important to understand colleges, whether technical, two year or four year institutions are increasingly gearing their classes to the adult learner. In many instances, the class times have been adjusted to meet the schedules of busy adults.

Knowledge will be the key for tomorrow's employment. Each year jobs that previously required little education are increasingly being automated. Bachelor degrees are becoming common in the workplace, so to advance with the educated it may be necessary to do the same. Taking the time to obtain a degree now will lay the groundwork to becoming a valued employee.

Still, returning to school does not mean that a degree of some sort has to be the outcome. Certificate programs are being offered by many schools that are specific to skills. To obtain may only require spending a semester or two attending school. The short amount of time spent in the classroom can make the difference in one's career.

With unemployment on the rise, especially in the manufacturing and luxury services it may be time to learn a new trade. Instead of beating on closed doors, new skills learned as a returning student could be the edge needed in a tight job market. Yes, there is a chance of no job or possibly advancement once the economy has rebounded. Still, taking advantage of this current downturn will improve future opportunities.

The educational process also offers new experiences that broaden the horizon. Sharing a classroom with others in the same situation that comes from different industries could open doors to a new position. Using this opportunity to network with fellow students, sharing war stories so to speak, will help smooth the transition into a new employment. Additionally, the confidence gained while learning will make a difference when interviewing.

Another reason to return to school is one seldom mentioned, yet so important to understand. An education is permanent. No one can take it away. The experience will be with you the remainder of your life, affecting you both financially and intellectually. Yes, statistics show the person with a higher degree of education will increase their income versus those that do not continue in the learning process.

Being laid off should not be an end to a career. Use this dip in the business cycle as a time to learn new skills. Returning to school offers the advantage of moving on while gaining an education that positions one for the eventual economic rebound.
