The Playstation 3 and Playstation 2 seem to be two totally different consoles and can't just be held up next to each other and compared from that. You have to look at all of the details and when doing so, you will in fact find that the Playstation 3 is by far superior to the Playstation 2.
Just like the Playstation 2 introduced the DVD player in a console, the Playstation 3 introduced a super expensive Blu-ray player to the console. This alone makes up for the cost of a PS3 since it costs around the same for typical Blu-ray player and your not even considering you getting a video game machine with it. The Cell Engine is very, very impressive and Sony isn't even close to demonstrating what they can perform with it. Each generation Sony makes significant improvements to their consoles and the Playstation 3 is definitely a giant step up from the Playstation 2.
The first noticeable difference you will see is the physical appearances. The Playstation 2, even before it had a re-model, was slimmer then the Playstation 3. This is due to the bigger processor inside of the Playstation 3, which is amazingly better then the Playstation 2.
The Playstation 3's graphics are HD and can display at 1080p which is truly Next Gen along with supporting Dolby Digital so it supports surround sound. The Playstation 3 renders its graphics much better then the Playstation 2 and you will notice how much different it casts Shadows in games and how the system limits the pixels to make objects more sizable and more precise.
The audio blows away the Playstation 2 due to the processor. It can process the games so quickly that it makes everything much more accurate and makes games feel all the more realistic. Now, the hand-shake problem is no fault of the Playstation 3, but the developers who are constructing that specific game. If you observe tiny details like that, you may notice how the voice matches the head, but the mouth doesn't match the voice. Meaning, you will see a character speaking in a game, but not actually see their mouth moving which is the same problem with trying to hold something. In a cut scene in most games, a weapon or object will be seen going through a characters hand.
The Playstation 3 introduced Trophies which are very amusing and is a very interesting reward system. Playstation 2 didn't have anything like this, so thats a step up right there. The Playstation 3 also introduced, Home. Home is a very innovative new concept where you have an avatar and you can interact in a world (almost like second life) free of charge with tons of other PSN users. Users either love or hate this, but one thing everyone can agree on is that it is ground breaking. Never performed before on a console before and this seems to be a great success. It's very fun and can keep you entertained for a while as you check out all of the different hot spots.
The Playstation 3 controllers -Six Axis and Dualshock 3- are a step up from the Playstation 2's Dualshock 2 controller. With the Dualshock 3 controller, you get the Six Axis's motion control and the Dualshock 3's rumble/feedback.
The entire Playstation 3 experience by far exceeds that of the Playstation 2s.
