The Last Letter
After years of you being a part of my life,
I knew that it was not to be,
The more I pulled closer to you,
The more you pushed me away.
The days and the miles pulled us apart,
As I longed to share my life with someone,
I knew that it was time to go,
Yet something inside tugged at me.
Was it our first kiss?
So tender, so pure, so special,
As you lightly brushed across my lips
As your eyes peered softly into my own.
Was it your touch?
So kind, so easy, so gentle,
As you held me in your arms,
As you made me feel safe and protected.
Was it you?
So strong, so knowledgeable, so relaxed,
You were driven from the start,
Your goals were always in sight.
The day I wrote that last letter,
I cried for you, I cried for me, I cried for us.
I knew that I had to do it,
I knew that it was time for me to live my life.
I was wasting my life waiting for you,
You had given me the freedom to go,
I just needed to make the decision,
I needed the bravery to set us both free.
The letter told you how much I loved you,
It let you know that you would always be in my heart,
It let you know what you had meant to me,
For more than seven years.
I wished you the best and I released you,
I went on to meet and marry someone else,
But always in the background you are there,
You were my first true love.
Now, it has been almost twenty years ago,
But I still remember you and you are still in my heart
You tried to come back once, but it was too late,
I hope for your happiness, I hope for your success.
The letter said it all, I would never forget,
But life must move on and so must we,
I still hold you in that special place,
Yet, I had to and must let you go.
