Short stories: A vacation with the family

Created on: July 11, 2009

Are you for real! Exclaimed Maddy as she looked out from the balcony of the tented room, her parents had booked for the week.

It's called family time Mads. Her mother patiently explained.

Its called a teenage torture palace, that's what it is! Maddy stomped off down the wooden steps that led to the rough, drying grassed area in front. Next your going to tell me you've packed pictionary and other exciting family games to keep us entertained in this lame place she huffed, turning back to face her mother, with her hands of her hips. She peered at her mother over the top of her sunglasses, daring her to make things worse by confirming her fears.

Her mother stood silent, absorbed in the view in front of her, only slightly obscured by her pouting daughter. Realising that she wasn't going to get any more response from her mother, Maddy spun round and stomped off towards the thatched building that had been referred to as a bar on their tour of the facilities.

Tony emerged from the tent and slide his arms under Paula's and kissed her gently on the neck. Paula smiled and nestled into Tony's chest.

That daughter of yours . . . he chuckled, Paula interrupted him before he could finish.

Don't say what I think you are going to say she said slowly I can give you a decent left hook from this position! Paula turned to face him with a big grin.

Well she always starts like this and then enjoys herself in the end, so don't think we need to worry. he kissed her firmly on the lips. I'm off to find out about the fishing tomorrow morning!

Paula followed him with her eyes, as he headed off in the same direction as her daughter. A murmur in the background indicated that Joshua was awake and would soon let the whole camp know of the fact. She took a last look at the view of trees clinging to the edge of the bank bordering the vast, sparkling river, before going back into the tent to attend to him.

Tony woke up with a start, the fresh air of the dawn brushing over his bare chest. Noisily he clambered out from under the mosquito net and stumbled into the bathroom. Several crashes, clangs and curses and a few moments later the sound of running water, indicated that Tony had successfully navigated his way to the shower. Paula sat up and called to Maddy, in the next room, to wake up. She was already up and presented herself in the doorway in her demin dixie shorts and bikini top. She smiled cheekily at her mother, whose open mouth was promptly shut as the words to say escaped
