The negative effects of Facebook

You are bored at work and decide to check your Facebook account to see if you have any new messages or if anyone has left any comments on the pictures you just recently posted. As you look around your page, you decide to update your status. The status lets other friends either what you are doing or how you are feeling at that particular moment. "I'm so bored...can't wait to be done with work" is what you decide to type for your status. Since you're done looking around and updating your status, you log off and get ready to do some real work.

This scenario occurs more often than one would think. A person thinks it is harmless to check their Facebook account when they have a free moment at work. Many employees are not aware of the increasing number of employers that are visiting these social networking sites in order to see what their employees are posting for the world to see. The employer is able to read that one of his employees is bored at work and can't wait to be done, thinks they should be making more money, or has an interview later for a different job. Many times this has lead to the employee being reprimanded or terminated.

The negative effects of Facebook rest solely in the user's hands. The user has the ability to turn such a site into a tool that can negatively affect their life. The information put onto the account is placed their by the individual in which the account belongs to. Whether information is about a current employer, employee, or another individual it can have a negative affect if taken in the wrong context.

Facebook can also have a negative affect if it is used by a child. Facebook is popular among younger individuals. If the account is not monitored properly by parents, the effects could prove to be negative. Bullying can occur as well as exchanges with sexual content. Parents should know at all times what pictures of their child are on any social networking site as well as messages that are being exchanged.

Not to mention the negative effects of spending too much time on Facebook. It is easy to become consumed in catching up with old acquaintances and looking at all new pictures that are available. It is not healthy to sit at the computer at spend an abundance of time on Facebook.

It can be a wonderful tool that allows people from all over the world to stay connected. However, the negative effects can far outweigh the positive if the user is not careful. If you are bored at work, wish you were making more money, or mad at your best friend, it is probably in your best interest to keep that information to yourself. Keep a positive attitude when using Facebook and utilize the benefits that it has to offer.
