Sure, Rice Krispies talk. We all know that. You pour a little milk in the bowl and they snap, crackle, and pop. But they don't say anything out loud.
Do you ever find yourself wanting to ask them something? What if Rice Krispies were God and we could ask them anything we wanted to? What would you ask?
I don't know what I would. I'd have to take a few seconds, pausing to think. The milk jug would be hovering in my hands, waiting to pour, as I processed all my thoughts.
I could ask what I was supposed to do with my life. I could ask what lottery numbers to play. I could ask which job I should choose. I could ask whom I was supposed to spend my life with.
Supposed to? Whatever happened to choice and free will?
I don't think we realize it, but when we ask our Rice Krispie Gods and our real gods, we submit ourselves and fail ourselves. We're supposed to answer these questions by ourselves, right? Yes, our gods can help us along the way when we are in trouble and need, but when you are sitting down to eat breakfast and find yourself wanting to ask your Rice Krispies a question, hold back and think for minute.
I could ask what I was supposed to do with my life.
"Or you know, I could just experiment with that- there are so many options out there, why submit myself to just one? I want to do something I love."
I could ask what lottery numbers to play.
"But the fun I get from the lottery doesn't rely on the money. I rely on the hope and excitement it gives every once and a while. And maybe I should stop playing altogether, because I could be using the money for something else. The tickets are so expensive nowadays, I bet I could start saving up the money I used to waste and use it for something productive."
I could ask which job I should choose.
"Why let my cereal make that decision? I can make a pros and cons list, weigh the options, benefits, and negative aspects all together. Then I can make a good decision for my lifestyle in the long term."
I could ask who I was supposed to spend my life with.
"I don't want to let someone else make that decision for me! I want to find love the right way and let it come to me. When it does, I should know, I guess. But if I don't, I'll let things play out. If they work, they work. If they don't, they don't. I'm okay with that, as long as I can find someone."
So, you see, the questions we all ask and the answers we all are looking for are inside ourselves. They always were and they always will be. So don't tip your cereal bowl and search the milk- you won't find it there.
