Who doesn't like a Labrador retriever? Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular and beloved breed of dogs in the world. The early Labrador retrievers were called St. John's water dogs originally from Newfoundland which is modern day Labrador, Canada. The St. John's Water Dogs were a cross breed of dog used for fishing. They jumped in the water and retrieved the fishing nets for fishermen. Later the this breed was taken to England where the Earls of Malmesbury and the Dukes of Buccleuch, avid duck hunters, eventually bred the modern day version of the Labrador retriever. Today, Labrador retrievers are known as popular working dogs to assist the blind, for police detection in drug searches and for working with custom agents at airports.

Modern day Labrador retrievers have black, yellow or chocolate brown glossy fur coats. The English Lab has a broader, stockier body while the American Lab is more lean and sleek in body build.

It's important to consider whether the Labrador retriever is right for you and your family. Labrador retrievers are very gentle pets with children or older people. They are good natured dogs that adjust well to their surroundings. This makes them an excellent choice of dog if you have small children. Because of their high energy, they make great dogs to take along for a jog. If you're looking for a gentle, good natured dog, look no further than the Labrador retriever. Or if you love sports, a Lab is a great companion on the field or on the bike trail. They absolutely love to run.

Labrador retrievers are known for their energetic eagerness to please their owners, but without proper training, they can become crazy and out of control. Thus, the Lab requires some consistent, gentle training. It is important to establish yourself as the dog's leader in your relationship with the Lab. Labs love to walk and run so it is vital that you provide lots of exercise for this dog. If you think you can be disciplined enough to train a Labrador retriever, this dog is for you. You will certainly reap the benefits of this sweet natured dog. He will quickly become established in your home and learn to obey your commands. He will bring much delight to you and your family.

Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular dogs in the world today. In the United States alone, they are the most well known dogs. Their sweet nature makes them an easy pet to own.
