My father has always been the hardest person on my gift giving list. He has everything, or he doesn't want it, or he doesn't feel that he needs it. So I have found some great ideas that have worked for my father over the past few years. And believe me, he is very good at telling you if he doesn't need it or if he has it already. So I know these have worked.
Movie tickets - I have purchased my father a two pack of movie tickets. You can buy these usually at Costco or another warehouse store for about $15. They can be used at any AMC, nationwide, and because they come with two tickets, he can take my mother with him. And since he can pick the movie, they have freedom to see whatever they have been wanting to see.
Food gift basket - I have gone to Hickory Farms and purchased them baskets before. Usually, I buy them the meat, cheese, cracker set that comes with the specialty mustards. They aren't too expensive, and because I actually picked out the basket, it is a little more meaningful than just sending the movie tickets or a gift card or something. They have always liked the baskets and I have never received complaints about them.
Wine Baskets - If you go to www.winebasket.com, they have a large array of wonderful baskets to choose from. And they aren't as expensive, (unless you get a big basket), as you might think. We have had good luck with them and my parents really liked it.
Send Something - There is a store where you can "send something". It is called somethingstore.com I did this one time and it was fun for my parents and for me too. The store basically charges you $10 per box, and than they just randomly grab a box and send it out to the person. You might get stuck with something dopey, (my dad told me he got the weirdest chia pet ever), or you may end up with something great, (on their website it keeps track of some packages and someone got a GPS car system), but either way you can tell the person you didn't pick it, explain what they do, and ask them to tell you what they got when it gets there.
A DVD of your family - This works well if it is a parent of you or your spouse. We sent my parents a DVD of photos of our family.
A gift card - If you don't mind being a little less personal, send a gift card to something you know the person likes. If they enjoy renting videos at Blockbuster, send a card for that. If they like books, try a gift card to Barnes and Nobles. If you know the person loves to shop at Macy's send a Macy's gift card, and if they
