The causes of hip dysplasia in dogs are usually due to the genetic heritage. Genetics are not the only reason for hip dysphasia in dogs, some of this ailment is due to environmental factors. The surface your dog walks on can contribute to hip dysphasia. This can happen to any breed of dog but some are more prone to it than others directly due to their breed.
Genetics
Genetics can have a great influence when it comes to hip dysplasia. There have been studies done that proved that genetics is the main cause of this condition. This means that the history of the parents plays an enormous role in deciding if hip dysplasia will show up in their offspring or not. Depending on the breed can make a world of difference. Some breeds are higher on the list of chances of having hip dysplasia. These breeds are German Shepherds, St. Bernards, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers and the Neapolitan Mastiffs.
Environmental factors
Environmental factors can influence the hip dysplasia of your dog by way of nutrition. If they are not getting the proper nutrition it raises the risk of hip dysplasia. This doesn't mean you're underfeeding your dog but rather over feeding him. When a dog is over fed it is just like a human that is overweight. It takes that much more strength to move their bodies around and their hips and legs suffer. The added weight is bound to put stress on joints and therefore more stress. There are other environmental factors that could influence hip dysplasia and that is stairways and jumping. Both of these activities put added stress on hips and joints if they are done too much. There is also another reason that your dogs not do these activities on a regular basis and that is it can cause arthritis.
Flooring
Sometimes we just don't think of flooring as a factor in hip dysplasia but it is a very important factor. Today many homes have laminated or hardwood floors. Some dogs have a real problem with this and find it very difficult to keep their footing. For example if your puppy stays on floors like this while he is growing he is more prone to hip dysplasia. A slippery floor will not cause hip dysplasia but it can certainly worsen the situation. Anything that causes your dog to lose his footing constantly is not good for his hips, joints and legs.
If you find your dog has hip dysplasia you need to take him to the vet. The vet will examine him and send him for x-rays to confirm the diagnosis. The physical exam and the x-rays should confirm hip dysplasia. The vet can help your dog with movement and pain by administering medication. He knows the causes of hip dysplasia in dogs and will advise you how to make your dog's life more comfortable.
