To tone or not to tone. This is a subject that continues to be greatly debated. Some dermatologists claim that facial toning is a complete waste of time and money. Many estheticians (a skin care specialist who has gone through a professional training program in the field of skin care) state that it is a very important step in any skin care routine.
The main purpose of a facial toner is to remove any residue from your cleanser, any dirt and excess oil, make-up, dead skin cells, and any other debris that your cleanser did not. In addition, facial toners can help to restore the skins Phbalance, which is affected by alkaline products (most cleansers), cosmetics, perspiration and poor nutrition. When you choose a facial toner, or floral water, that is alcohol free and Ph correct, you can help promote balance and optimal skin function. It also prepares your skin for the application of your chosen moisturizer and/or anti-aging treatments. When a facial toner is used prior to applying these products, it will actually dilute them slightly which allows for a smoother application and you will also end up using less product, saving you money.
The use of a facial toner can tighten your pores, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They have also been found to be very beneficial in those people who have oily skin, as it helps to control acne and removes unwanted shine from the skin. Not too long ago, when facial toners first appeared on the beauty market, they were designed for those people suffering from very oily skin, and they consisted of mostly stripping ingredients such as alcohol. The majority of facial toners in the market place today are designed with various gentle astringent herbs, antioxidants, anti-irritants, and many other ingredients that will compliments one's skin care regime. Today, almost anyone with any skin type can enjoy the many benefits of a facial toner.
Other benefits of using a facial toner include:
They hydrate the skin, which helps promote optimal cell function and leaves you with a complexion that appears younger looking. You can apply a facial toner as a mist after applying your make-up (especially mineral make-up) and it will set the look and provide a dewy finish without the oil. A facial toner cools, soothes and refreshes the skin. It is a great pick-me-up after a workout, being out in the sun, or in dry or air-conditioned environments.
So, who is right? What is the right choice? The bottom line is that the choice is yours to make. Give facial toners a try. If you like the way your skins looks and feels when you use them, then by all means use it and enjoy!
