Reflections: Domestic violence

by Suzanna Billingsley

Created on: July 09, 2009   Last Updated: October 07, 2009

Five kinds of people will read this, those who were once a victim of domestic violence, those who are a victim, those who will become a victim, those who helped a victim, and those who preyed upon an innocent person making them a victim.

Do not mislead yourself by thinking it will never happen to you, because domestic violence can happen to anyone, it has no preference of persons. If you have never suffered domestic violence at the hands of someone who said they loved you and promised to protect you, then consider yourself lucky. Because you cannot imagine what these victims go through because someone thinks they can abuse another person and get away with it.

I knew a woman who had a beautiful heart before he got his hands on her. At first she believed as everyone else that he was a good guy. But what they failed to see, was that idea he impressed upon everyone, was his performance, and those closest to her were his audience and fans. After a few years of light slaps in the face she realized he wasn't who he made himself out to be, for he was an actor and his theater would become her pain.

She kept quiet about the horrible things he did to her, because he would punish her if she embarrassed him in front of others, mainly those who praised him and thought highly of him.

After years of black eyes, cracked and chipped teeth, healed over fractures, busted eardrums, and being choked to the point of death, along with his death threats, as with stalking and hunting her down after trying to escape his wrath, he finally paralyzed her by using fear. He told her that he could kill her and cut her up into little pieces then put her body into garbage bags then toss her to the curb on trash day, and no one would ever believe it was him. The saddest truth of this for her, was that it was true.

Fearing for her life she decided to seek help and leave him. She went to his family for help, but they were sickened more towards her than over the issue of their sons abuse. They
