Chapter 5 Concert Night (from the same novel as: Ch.1 Emily (Trust), Ch.2 Christy (Family), Ch.3 Anna (Uncertainty), Ch.4 Fatima (Death of a parent) Maybe concert night wasn't the ideal time to tell Ms. Tracy, the choir director, we were leaving, Anna thought, looking nervously from Ms Tracy to Christy.
I see, said Ms. Tracy. She crossed her arms and tapped her patent leather shoe on the hardwood floor, silencing the other girls. This is hardly the time to get into this kind of discussion, she said in a huff.
Anna ran the palms of her hands down her skirt trying desperately to straighten it out some more. Thankfully, she didn't have to do the talking.
I'm sorry, Ms. Tracy. We didn't plan on interrupting your concert with a big discussion, said Christy.
Anna's whole body cringed. Oh, boy here we go. She started breathing from her diaphragm to calm herself. The teacher's eyes burned.
We just wanted to let you know, said Christy, as nice as a schoolgirl would say to her elder, Out of courtesy, of course, she added.
Around them the other girls started clucking softly to each other. What did they think of that, she wondered? They probably thought we were crazy to quit.
Where did Christy get the guts to stand up to teachers like that? Anna couldn't help but admire her friend's bravery, even if she didn't exactly approve of talking back to teachers.
Yes, out of courtesy, you say, said Ms. Tracy. Rocking back and forth on her pumps, Anna was expecting Ms. Tracy to take a swipe at Christy.
Yes, we're starting a quartet, said Christy, still standing tall.
I see. Well I suggest you be a little more careful about how you speak to me in future, said Ms. Tracy with a firm nod of her head. And a little more notice would have been quite helpful. She spun on her heel and clinked off, muttering something under her breath, leaving the girl singers to buzz and chatter in her wake.
Christy turned to the others and smiled. Don't worry about her. She'll get over it. We just surprised her, that's all. Anna's brows crinkled. Don't worry, Anna, said Christy, It'll be fine. We sing tonight and then we're done.
Anna shook her head knowing she would have crumbled under such a hot glare, but not Christy. She always seemed to have a protective shield around her a huge bubble. Everything bounced off her bubble, leaving cute Christy beaming with pride right at the centre. She looked to Emily for reassurance.
It'll be fine, Anna, said Emily. I just hope we get the beginning of the Benjamin Britten
