A big dog is more dangerous to have around children, only because of its size and power. A medium to big dog alone could easily break a child's bone, and a small dog could not do so much damage; making them safer round children.

Regardless of the dogs temperament or history they could do anything when agitated by small children; this also apply to small dogs where, as they can not do as much damage. We can never be sure of a dogs sate of mind and if he or she is in a bad mood they could jump, bite, and even scar a child; This could be for a lot of reasons. It could be your child poking, pulling or trying to take something away from your dog.

Yes, Small dogs do tend to nibble more, but this is normally friendly and even if it is not it still dose not have the power to leave any lasting damage. Where as playful or not big dogs could jump on up and knock you over, but a small dogs would probably find it hard to knock a small child over.

Now I know from first hand experience that a dogs history dose not change anything. I used to know some one that owned a germen shepherded, and he was so gentle and well passed his prime; I had know the dog and owner all the dogs life . But one day i was walking with him down the beach and he just randomly attack a different dogs and broke his leg. My friend was advised that he should have the dog put down, and while he was thinking about that it happened again the dog attacked another dog in the woods.

Most big dogs (that I know) are friendly and would never attack anyone, even if they jump its playful, and they have learnt not to jump around children and even if there toy or bone is taken they don't mind. But the only thing here is most of the dogs have been raised by the owners of there life, and the owner are good people and are almost always calm.

It is best to raise a dog all its life is you can't if not it is best to talk to the owner before buying to ask about the dog being violent and your dog could turn violent for the first time when he hears loud music, T.V, fireworks; He may get scared at certain things and if disturbed turn violent also.

Of you dog dose turn violent, or to hard to control. It is best if you get a dog trainer, give him to a dog trainer or put him down depending on how bad it is. As it is better safe then sorry.

To conclude small and big dogs are ok around children, just make sure the dogs and children are ok with each other; because if your dog and child fight for what ever reason your child will properly end up worse against a big dog. So it is safer to have a small dog around children because you can not control fate and who knows what could happen; and if worst comes to worse a small dogs will properly not leave any lasting damage.
