Steps for younger looking hands

Created on: July 08, 2009

As we age, the skin on our hands naturally takes on a more wrinkled appearance than we experienced during youth. This is owing to a reduced number of deep skin cells and a loss of elasticity as well as flexibility. Although it is impossible to replenish the missing cells, it is possible to reduce the appearance of aging skin using a few simple beauty routine techniques.

Thinning cells can be re-hydrated, thus giving a more plump appearance. The extra volume helps to pad-out the external wrinkled layer of skin, thus reducing the number of visible wrinkles. A good moisturiser is essential.

During the daytime, use a non-greasy, fragrance-free skin lotion. This will be easily absorbed. Fragrances of any kind are absorbed into the skin, and ultimately into the blood stream. Many people fail to realise the implications of this. Each time you wash your hands, re-apply the hand lotion. It is advisable to leave a pump dispenser next to wash basins for this purpose.

During the night, hands (and feet) will benefit from the application of a hand cream or balm, preferably not lotion. As well as plumping the skin through re-hydration, it also softens the surface layer of skin, thus reducing hard and dry-skin areas. Again, opt for a non-fragranced product. The night-time application often allows time for a little further indulgence. Rather than just rubbing your hands together to aid absorption, give yourself a mini hand-massage, to get the blood flowing properly. You will be surprised by the effects in the morning. This should be a regular part of your beauty regime.

Many of us are guilty of drinking less water than our bodies require. Take a couple of extra glasses of this natural medicine each day. It keeps the body hydrated and helps to flush toxins from the body, effortlessly. Your hands will benefit from this considerably, since they are constantly exposed to a variety of chemicals each time we touch an object.

Another thing to consider is washing your hair and dirty dishes. Any contact with detergents such as shampoo and washing-up liquid act as skin degreasers, they are indiscriminate in their function. Always apply a hand lotion after using these, and preferably wear plastic gloves when washing dishes by hand. The skin secretes oil to keep the skin supple - if you regularly remove it, your skin will appear dry and brittle.

Soon, your hands will look more youthful. To enhance their perfect appearance, treat your hands to a manicure. File your nails, then massage a nail-nourishing balm onto each nail. Your nails will shine just as well as if you applied a clear nail polish; your nail beds will be more healthy too. Alternatively, a good quality nail polish can be applied, but do remove this carefully afterwards. There are many really aggressive solvent-based nail polish removers which can damage the skin around your nails; opt for an oil-based remover instead.

Healthy younger-looking hands are achievable with just a few minutes of effort each day; enjoy the experience.
