MOSS (Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server) enables organizations to build portals, applications and provide collaboration on documents and sites, Microsoft has released this product under the office suite so we could say Sharepoint is a member of office suite, it also has various tools- if you brows Microsoft site www.microsoft.com/sharepoint then you will find a lot of stuff about this product.

SPD (sharepoint designer) is used for customizing sharepoint UI. Sharepoint is used for document management-The term Document Management has been globally used for creating, sharing, organizing and storing information electronically. Document Management for organization is to store documents NOT only store them in organized manner like in category or in cabinets but to secure them and finally to retrieve documents on time- it's very hard for anyone to find specific document from archival and represent it- that is why document management system come in picture and played role. If you are working without document management system so you are just losing a lot of information held in your enterprise.

There is difference between document management and document imaging system - document management system is designed to manage document electronically whereas document imaging system will help you to convert papers into electronic files is called document imaging.
Sharepoint provides full feature of document management, content management, record management, business process management. Although it does not support Document Imaging but with other vendors products especially Canon scanning solution -you can bundle it with Sharepoint and archive the entire vault in Sharepoint with easy access of your information.

Sharepoint support document management features specially versioning a major document management feature where you can create 511 max versions of one instance. If you have archived a PDF file so you can execute a full text search in Sharepoint which means sharepoint can extract data from within PDF using its filter.

Sharepoint is a world of applications", it's not just a portal solution- but It also provides content management, business process management, so when one has to automate business process they could do it using sharepoint along with info path you can design forms and automate entire processes including Leave Request, Policy Approval, LC opening process and many, you think of any process and sharepoint can solve your problem with Info Path.

SharePoint also enables organisations to implement record management portal along with Sarbense Oxly for compliance.

At end Sharepoint is a platform for Internet from where Internet could be monitored and secured Bill Gates was right when he announced this more than 10 years ago.
