Censoring musicians, such as Eminem, is like telling a wild animal not to hunt for their dinner. Music is a way of expression. While some artists choose to sing or rap about watching their children grow up too fast, others choose lyrics that tell the story of their life struggles. If the words or behaviors are expressed in a manner that is offensive or makes an individual uncomfortable, the simple solution is to not listen to it. However, what is offensive to one individual probably isn't for another.
If the censorship of these musicians is to protect the impressionable minds of our children, than that process needs to begin in the home. It is a parent's duty to screen the music that children are listening to. The parent should set standards and morals that are to be withheld by their children that fit within their family. A parent previews the music that is being listened to and expresses what is acceptable and what it not. This responsibility lies within the parent, not the musician. By being more aware and involved in their lives and choices, parents will have the capability to teach children.
The content of the music is placed on the product. This informs the buyer of what to expect with the purchase. That is really all that can be expected from the musician. They have the right to express themselves in the same manner as any other artist. To censor their music would be the equivalent of taking away their voice. Such artists are successful because their have a fan base that appreciates and accepts them. They are willing to spend money to hear what that artist has to say. There are people that relate to the lyrics being provided.
While I admit that I have heard songs that have made me cringe, that doesn't mean that all musicians should be molded to my taste. Many artists have original versions of their songs along with censored versions available. If the words are offensive, then the censored version is probably the one to choose. The world of music has definitely changed over the years. This change is a reflection of how the music industry is evolving.
Censoring musicians is not the solution to any problem. While this has been the subject of debates for a long time, the truth remains that there is ultimately no need for the debate. Musicians are a lot like writers, storytellers, poets, and any other creative professional. They have a story that they are expressing. The words used to reach their audience remains the choice of the musician. Just as the choice to listen to these expressions remain with the audience. Therefore, as long as someone is willing to listen to the message they are delivering, the musician has the right to perform as they see fit.
