Gender Diversity in the Workplace Promotes Respect for All People
According to Diversity Builder, "Companies that incorporate a consistent diversity program and advocate diversity in the workplace experience valuable benefits such as: higher employer retention rates, improved employee (individual and team) performance and morale, reduced harassment incidences and discrimination lawsuits, improved workplace staffing (diversity recruitment)." Diversity, a word synonymous with change and difference, is necessary for success in any business environment.
Each person is a unique and special individual. No one is the same, and we weren't meant to be. Companies that hire people with different backgrounds and from diverse cultures are open to the talents and treasures of the person they employ. They seek out qualified individuals, dispelling prejudices that should never enter into the picture in the first place.
Gender diversity is about sexual differences. This includes but is not limited to women receiving lower pay, mothers being penalized for taking care of their families, homosexuals being told, "Don't ask, don't tell," in the military, transsexuals being alienated from mainstream jobs, and men being expected to provide the main source of income for their families.
Employers Set the Tone
When you are an employer, it is vital that you treat your employees fairly. That is why it is so important to support diversity in your company. You want your employers to be glad they work for you. One of the best ways to do this is to provide unbiased benefits for them, and focus on their abilities to perform the job they were hired to do, without penalizing them for who they are. When you set clear expectations about job performance, and evaluate your employees based on their performance, you earn the reputation of becoming an employee of choice, and one that everyone wants to work for.
Employees Create Their Team
Without the worry of discrimination looming over their heads, people of different gender backgrounds can focus on working together as a team. Once the employer sets the tone of acceptance, employees usually follow suit and work to promote good business, without focusing on the unimportant issues that support unwarranted gossip around the water cooler. Co-workers show more respect toward one another, and overall office morale is usually higher.
Company Loyalty Expands
When staff members are treated fairly, they are more likely to be forgiving when problems occur. They will not rush to judgment about ulterior motives when things don't go their way, or they get overlooked for that promotion they want so badly. This in turn lessens the repercussions of complaints from harassment and discrimination backlash.
Employer Staffing Options
People come from so many backgrounds and cultures. Employers seeking to hire the best person for the job, without discriminating against people for their gender, have more applicants to choose from. They hire a person, not a man or woman, not a heterosexual, homosexual, or transsexual. By opening up their options without prejudice, they provide an environment of peace and acceptance for all people, regardless of their differences.
