How to get a free credit report

If watch television or use the Internet, chances are you have seen numerous advertisements for "free" credit reports. Interested to know what your credit report says, you log onto the website or call the toll free number only to find out that in order to get your "free" credit report, you have to sign up for a credit monitoring service that costs you around $15 per month. Not wanting to go through the hassle, you decline the offer and your credit report remains shrouded in secrecy.

Fortunately, government intervention made it possible for you to obtain a completely free copy of your credit report from all three credit reporting bureaus (those bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). If you go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com, you will be able to obtain a copy of your credit report from all three credit reporting bureaus. This service is completely free and takes only a few minutes.

Keep in mind that when you use this service, you will have to enter personal information into the system in order for your credit report to be found. This means divulging your full, legal name, your date of birth, your address, your social security number, and some other information. The good news is that www.AnnualCreditReport.com is a secure website. As such, your information will be protected.

www.AnnualCreditReport.com does have its limitations. You are entitled only to one free credit report per year from each of the bureaus. As such, you will receive three credit reports total. Additionally, you will not receive your credit score. If you want that, you are going to have to pay for it. However, because you are entitled to one free report per year from each of the three bureaus, you can technically get one free report every four months.

When you use www.AnnualCreditReport.com, you will be able to access all three credit reports if you want, but you are not required to. Therefore, if you obtain only one of your credit reports, you can get a new one every four months by using a different credit bureau's report. Keep in mind that your credit report will not be identical from every bureau. You may seem some discrepancies, but none will be major (for example, one credit report may show more credit inquiries than another). If this does not bother you, having a new, free credit report every four months is not a bad deal.

Using www.AnnualCreditReport.com is probably the best, completely free way to obtain copies of your credit reports. You get your credit reports instantly, the system is secure, and if you use the website correctly, you can get a updated credit report for free every four months. Go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com and find out what is in your credit report.
