Microsoft Windows happens to be one of the most popular operating systems used on personal computers. Millions of users use it for everyday work and play. However, it also happens to be a target for viruses and trojans that can cause issues in performance and safety of a computer. There are a few simple steps that can be taken to ensure users that their computers will be secure.
1. Firewall
Windows comes with a built-in firewall. Having an active firewall can help protect unauthorized users from accessing a computer through the internet.
2. Automatic Updates
Microsoft routinely issues security patches and fixes for vulnerabilities that they happen to discover. It is important to download and install these updates regularly to ensure that your computer is up-to-date on and not vulnerable to any malware.
It is important to have virus protection software to ensure that your computer stays safe. While having a virus scanner is important, it is also vital to constantly update to keep your software current. Many companies offer a subscription while others are available free of charge such as, AVG Anti-Virus [http://free.avg.com/]
While many users may feel that having more than one virus scanning software is better, it can actually cause problems. It is important to only have one virus scanner and should be uninstalled if you choose to install another one.
4. Spyware/Malware
Spyware and Malware scanning software ensure that your private information is not being gathered. Just like the virus scanner, it is important to constantly keep it up-to-date. Many virus scanners now are coming packaged with spyware/malware scanners, including AVG Anti-Virus.
5. Internet Safety
It is important to avoid clicking pop-ups or accessing websites that you do not trust. Internet browsers are now more secure and it is important to keep security settings activating in them to prevent any attacks from websites.
6. Email
It is important to open email from senders you know. Some emails contain spam, and while that is just unwanted emails, some contain attachments that contain viruses, spyware, and malware. It is important to be vigilant on which emails you open and to make sure that you do not download attachments from unknown senders.
There is no way to secure Windows 100%. However, these steps will help make your computer more secure and harder for hackers, viruses, and malware to cause damage. Users need to take steps to ensure that they do not fall victim to attacks.
